President Duterte appoints Justice Martires as new Ombudsman

IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay Province - President Rodrigo Duterte today announces the appointment of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Martires as the new Ombudsman, replacing Conchita Carpio-Morales, who retired today.

Justice Martires, 69, was endorsed by 11 justices of the high court to the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC), the body tasked to screen applicants for the post.

Martires is a graduate of San Beda College of Law.  He is also a fraternity brother of Duterte.

He was appointed by the president to the Supreme Court, and he was one of those who voted for the ouster petition against former Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.

President Duterte announced the appointment of Martires during his speech at the '69th Araw ng Ipil' at the Ipil Municipal Plaza in Zamboanga Sibugay Province, this afternoon, 26 July 2018.

The event bears the theme, "Pagtambayayong 2018: Kauban ang Kinaiyahan sa Kalambuan," or as translated by the locals, "Convergence 2018: Kasama ang Kalikasan sa Kaunlaran."

The occasion commemorates the founding anniversary of the Municipality of Ipil, which was established on 1945.

The new Ombudsman will serve a seven-year term.

Last Friday, July 20, the members of the JBC in a meeting voted for the contenders.  Based on the result, Martires garnered seven votes, against the other contenders which include retired Sandiganbayan Presiding Justice Edilberto Sandoval with five votes, and private practitioner Atty. Felito Ramirez, who got four votes.
