Iligan cops hunt homicide suspect in love triangle

ILIGAN CITY - Operatives of the Iligan City Police are now conducting a pursuit operation against a suspect who stabbed a "trisikad " public tri-pedal cycle transport) driver to death.

Police Officer 3 Efriem Baje, investigator of Iligan City Police Station 5, said Saturday the suspect, Jessie Manugas, 35, stabbed his friend Aga Gapul, 39, around 10 p.m. Thursday at Rabago Subdivision in Barangay Villaverde here.

The victim died on the spot due to multiple stab wounds all over his body.

The suspect was known to be temporarily residing at Barangay Saray.

Initial investigation showed that Gapul and Manugas' wife, Marissa, 32, were walking at a park in Villaverde when the suspect arrived on board a motorcycle.

"The suspect confronted the victim but the latter ran and was chased by the suspect and stabbed him several times that resulted to his instantaneous death.  The suspect then fled to unknown direction," Baje said.

The police are now looking into jealousy as the motive for the killing.

"The victim and wife of the suspect were dating at the park.  The suspect arrived, confronted the victim and eventually stabbed him to death," Baje added.

Berlyn Paghasian, brother-in-law of the victim, said the suspect and the victim were friends.

He said it has been public knowledge in their area that the victim and the suspect's wife were having a relationship.

Paghasian said last month, the suspect cried while pleading to the victim to cut the relationship with his wife.

"They were settled with the Purok President and signed an agreement that they (Marisa Manugas and Aga Gapul) will end their relationship but I always received information that my brother-in-law (Gapul) was seen visiting her (Marisa) in Linamon town (Lanao del Norte)," Paghasian said.

Paghasian added that their family will file charges against Manugas including he wife who is now hiding. [Divina Suson, PNA]
