Maute-ISIS gunmen surrender in Lanao del Sur

LANAO DEL SUR - Another three Maute-ISIS gunmen, all of whom belonged to the terror leader Abu Dar's group, surrendered to the 82nd Infantry Battalion in Piagapo, Lanao del Sur at 12 p.m., Saturday.

Two other gunmen had earlier surrendered to the 55th Infantry Battalion in Lanao del Sur's Pagayawan town, at about 9 a.m. Friday.

Major Gen. Roseller Murillo, the Army's 1st Infantry Division commander, did not release the identities of the two surrenderers, but they belong to the group of Owayda Benito Marohomsar, alias Abu Dar.

Lt. Col. Ian Ignes, Army's 55th Infantry Battalion commander, said the two decided to surrender since they "were tired of running and evading our troops based on our custodial debriefing."

"Dissatisfied and discontented with the leadership and capabilities of the group is the reason why they've surrendered," 82nd Infantry Battalion commander Lt. Col. Jumawan explained.

The three latest surrenderees also turned in their weapons: a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG), an RPG launcher, an M1 Garand rifle, and ammunition.

"While we are supporting the recovery, reconstruction and rehabilitation of Marawi, our efforts against Maute/ISIS remnants will be continuous in order to achive a peaceful and progressive community in our area of operation," added Col. Romeo Brawner, 103rd Infantry Brigade Commander.

Meanwhile, Maj. Gen. Roseller Murillo, 1st Infantry Division and Joint Task Force Zampelan (Zamboanga Peninsula and Lanao Provinces) commander, commended his men's efforts which led to the surrender of the gunmen.

"Our campaign against terrorists will be relentless and we will take advantage of their weakened leadership and capabilities in order to attain a just and lasting peace in our area of operation," Murillo emphasized. [Merlyn Manos/DVM, GMA News and Teofilo Garcia, Jr., PNA]
